Meet the Artist

I am a contemporary artist who made Birmingham, Alabama my home in 1987. I earned my Master’s degree in Elementary Education and spent eight years teaching fourth grade before marrying my husband, Bill. Together, Bill and I have had 3 children and 5 grandchildren who call me “Yaya.”

For twenty plus years, I pursued my second phase of creativity as Co-Founder and Designer for Sweet Pea Designs, a personalized stationery company. There I used original art to create a stationery “wardrobe” for the entire family.

In 2016, following my career in beautiful papers, I found that the next stage of life led naturally to my lifelong love of painting. My faith and quiet home life nestled between two mountains is a constant source of inspiration. Walking and horse trails, lakes, the abundance of trees, plant life and gentle creatures never fail to provide peace and inspiration.

I am an abstract artist with a love of color and whimsy…an eclectic artist or lover of more than one subject, I most often paint florals, abstracts, flower ladies and in 2026 have recently begun small imaginative landscapes. My flower ladies have been a favorite for many. I concentrate on the flowers being the symbol for character traits that make our world a much better place…each flower lady has her own distinctive story.

I am inspired by my own garden and “she shed” where I spend as much time as I can. In fact, my garden as well as closer spots like outside my studio door are meant to provide a plethora of cutting flowers as well as a winsome and peaceful place to think creatively and enjoy nature.

How do I spend my time other than painting?

I would say being with Henry, our new goldendoodle, working in my garden, reading and anytime spent with Billy and our grandchildren.

Flowers and gardening really connect my art and home. As noted on my “home page” we have completed a major home construction project and all our landscaping was planned to provide cuttings for any time of the year!

What I am Learning in This Season of Life:

WHAT I am finding out about myself is that the older I get the braver and more comfortable I am to walk to my own beat whether it is what I have to say, what I do, or the values and faith I hold. It feels so freeing to know who you are without fear, embarrassment or confusion... I know who I am.
